Work to restore the iconic spire at Skinners' School is well underway and progressing well.
After inspections by structural engineers and specialist restorers, Baxalls Construction have started the complex job of installing temportary wooden frames to support the spire so the rotten wooden posts could be cut out and replaced.
Chris Keep, Site Manager for Baxalls Construction, comments on the restoration work
"Works to the spire are progressing well.
Temporary frames were installed to support the spire, allowing the removal of the two rotten posts. With the two new posts and new transoms now installed, the temporary frames have been removed, meaning the spire is now free standing once again.
The leadwork contractor has now commenced redressing the lead in accordance with the architect's design, as shown in the attached photo.
The works remain on programme to be completed by the end of August."
Thank you to eveyone who supported the restoration project by climbing the tower, bidding in the silent auction for the 20 name plaques to be attached to the lead skirt of the spire and for all your generous donations towards this emergency project.
We will have another update once the restoration is complete.
