LAWRENCE ATWELL SOCIETY
In 1588 (the year of the Spanish Armada), Lawrence Atwell, a member of the Skinners’ Company who lived in Exeter, created an endowment from his lands in London and Godalming “to set poor people upon work”.
In 1880 it was considered appropriate to use some of the funds to support the Company’s schools. Skinners’ school was a beneficiary. The Atwell Fund still gives financial assistance to enable young people to qualify for a range of careers and professions: it continues to help some students at the school to this day.
Since its foundation in 1887, legacies have played a pivotal role in securing the future of Skinners’ school. The School’s first benefactor Lawrence Atwell’s estate was the first legator. He left land and property in London and the Surrey as an endowment to The Skinners’ Company, who used some of the funds to establish Skinners’ school.
Legacies are one of the most effective ways to make an enduring contribution to Skinners’ School and are also a simple and straightforward way of giving, without affecting the immediate financial needs of yourself and your family. All gifts left to charities in a Will are also exempt from tax and could reduce your inheritance tax rate by around 10 per cent.
In 2026 we are launching the Lawrence Atwell Society, the schools' Legacy Club. Our ambition is to reach 140 new legacy pledgers by the end of 2027, our 140th anniversary year.
Members of the Lawrence Atwell Society are invited to the school annually for lunch with the Headmaster in June.
Today, the school is supported by a number of Old Skinners’ and friends through its legacy programme. These gifts have been put to immediate use to support and help shape the future of our great school and the generations of students to come.
In 2027, Skinners’ School will celebrate its 140th anniversary. As we approach this milestone, it is our hope the Old Skinners’ and friends will consider including the school in their Wills and help us realise our aim of 140 legacies by 2027. We hope you will consider becoming part of this wonderful and vital tradition.
Making a Will is an important step and it is recommended that you seek professional legal advice. When making a bequest in your Will, please note that the beneficiary should be the Skinners’ School Development Fund, Registered Charity no: 286 884
Today, we invite you to become a member of the Atwell Society, our legacy giving society, to help future generations of Skinners’ students and to ensure we provide the very best education and facilities at Skinners’ School.
We look forward to meeting you at one of our special events for members of the Atwell Society which are held annually.
